Theodore C. Friedman, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Medicine-UCLA School of Medicine and Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science; is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine and the Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Molecular Medicine and Metabolism at Charles R. Drew University. Dr. Friedman is board certified in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. He is also an endowed professor in Cardiometabolic Diseases. He is the director of The Next Generation Substance Abuse Research Training at CDU and UCLA (NGSART-CU). He has published over 120 papers in peer-review journals and wrote the thyroid and adrenal chapters for the widely-read textbook, Cecil Essentials of Medicine. His basic science research interests are in the effect of drugs of abuse on the endocrine system and is currently working on the effects of nicotine and e-cigarettes on the liver, muscle and heart. He has a patent on a chamber to give e-cigarettes to mice. His clinical research interests are adrenal and pituitary disorders as well as diabetes and metabolism. He sees patients and is the lead Endocrinologist at the Martin Luther King, Jr. outpatient clinic and runs a weekly obesity group visit. He is the chairman of the DHS Endocrinology Work Group that helps optimize treatment for large numbers of patients with diabetes, obesity and endocrine conditions. Dr. Friedman is very committed to starting an Internal Medicine Residency Program at the Long Beach VA.

Arnel M. Joaquin, MD

Arnel M Joaquin, MD graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine in Manila, Philippines and completed his residency at the Wayne State University Internal Medicine Program in Detroit, Michigan. He did a 2-year fellowship training in Geriatrics at the UCLA School of Medicine. Dr. Joaquin has been involved with Charles R. Drew University as the chief of geriatrics and program director of the geriatric fellowship program. Being very active in academic medicine, he has trained fellows, residents, medical and PA students in the inpatient, outpatient, skilled nursing facilities, and non-institutional settings. His main areas of practice are primary care in adults and geriatric patients.

Associate Program Director Internal Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science Kenny Vu, DO earned his medical degree from Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Vallejo, CA. Dr. Vu is one of the Associate Program Directors, and outpatient training site director at the primary participating clinical teaching site (Long Beach VA Medical Center). He will manage day to day operations of the program. He also holds the position of Health Sciences Associate Clinical Professor at the University of California, Irvine.

Katie Cramer, MD is a board-certified practicing internal medicine hospitalist. She graduated from Stanford Medical School and trained at Mount Sinai and George Washington University before joining the hospitalist faculty at the University of Chicago. She then joined the clinician educator faculty at the Long Beach VA in 2018. Her interests include simulation training, remediation in graduate medical education, and medical ethics. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor for both UC Irvine Department of Internal Medicine and the Charles R Drew Department of Internal Medicine.

Associate Program Director, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science

S. Monica Soni, MD is a board-certified practicing internist and physician executive. She graduated from Harvard Medical School and trained at UCSF in the primary care track based out of the San Francisco General Hospital. She works at the nexus of population health, social justice, and health system affordability. An agitator for change and stickler for clinical excellence, Monica has worked in quality, operations, and value-based care in both the public and private sectors. Before joining New Century Health, Dr. Soni served as the Director of Specialty Care for the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, the second largest municipal health system in the United States. Other roles have included the Director of Continuity Care for Martin Luther King, Jr. Outpatient Center where she led the primary care, urgent care and transitions of care clinics. She is also an Assistant Clinical Professor within both the UCLA Department of Medicine and Charles R. Drew University Department of Internal Medicine.

Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science and University of California, Irvine School of Medicine.

Samuel Baz, MD received his medical degree from the University of Southern California and his residency training in the Loma Linda University Primary Care Internal Medicine Track. He has dedicated his career to medical education starting in 2000 when he served as chief resident at Riverside County Regional Medical Center (now Riverside University Medical Center). After a brief stint in a rural private practice, he joined the Veterans Affairs Health Care System in 2005 where he served various roles including director of the LLVAMC internal medicine residency clinic and associate program director. Additionally, he served as the internal medicine residency program director at Loma Linda University from 2011-2016, and the deputy chief of medicine and hospitalist chief from 2018-2020. He continues to have interest in quality management and patient safety education and is the director of the Chief Resident for Quality and Safety Program at the Long Beach VAMC.

Roberto Vargas, MD, MPH is Assistant Dean for Health Policy and Inter-Professional Education within the College of Medicine and Director of the Health Policy Pillar of the Urban Health Institute at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU). Dr. Vargas is leading University-wide efforts in health policy analysis and health services research. He supports efforts in action and advocacy consistent with the CDU Advantage and mission of promoting health equity and social justice. Research expertise includes descriptive and comparative analyses of health care interventions to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities in care as well as community engagement in partnered research efforts. Dr. Vargas completed a Master of Public Health degree at Harvard School of Public Health, medical degree from Jefferson Medical College, and undergraduate degree in the History and Sociology of Science from the University of Pennsylvania.

John Uyanne M.D., M.S., FACP completed his medical degree from the University of Benin Faculty of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine and his fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science.

Chizobam Ani M.D., M.P.H. PhD is an internist and epidemiologist. He is a graduate of the University College Hospital in Ibadan, Nigeria. He completed his residency training in internal medicine at Loma Linda University. He also holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Wichita State University and University of Kansas in addition to a PhD in Epidemiology from the Loma Linda University. Dr Ani’s primary research interest is focused on cardiometabolic diseases particularly risk factors and interventions to mitigate these risks among minority ethnic communities. He is currently working on several studies aimed at understanding the unique role of diabetes on cardiomyopathy and heart failure among ethnic minorities.
